Data Visualization: The Reproductive Health Debate in the Philippines

Amid the heated debate over population control in the Philippines, the National Statistics Office released last Oct. 19, 2011 a study, which shows that there were 1.75 million live births registered in 2009.

That’s a staggering three births every minute or an average of 199 births per hour.

The report also said that about 195,662 of the babies were born to mothers under 20 years old.

The top three regions with the highest number of births are all in Luzon, where the capital Manila is located. Topping the list is the region covering the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon.

Meanwhile, seven out of 10 live births were medically assisted either by a doctor, a nurse, or a certified midwife. The rest were assisted by local non-certified midwives.

Data Visualization: Thanksgiving Holiday Shopping Expenditures in the US up $52.4 B in 2011

Despite the overall economic picture, average spending by American shoppers is up $398.62 over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, bringing in a record-breaking $52.4 billion for 2011.

According to the National Retail Federation, the total amount spent is up $7.4 billion from last year, the strongest increase since 2007. Also a record 226 million shoppers visited stores and online shops over the Black Friday weekend, Nov. 24-27.

Of the amount, an estimated 37.8 percent was spent online, which translates to about $19.8 billion.

Among the buyers’ top picks were clothing and accessories, electronics, books and video games, toys and food items.

Meanwhile, the retail organization predicts that during Cyber Monday, the total number of shoppers who will be using mobile device like iPhone and Blackberry to shop will go up to 14.5 percent from 6.9 percent last year. That 2011 figure is equivalent to 17.8 million users.
